Need to overhaul transport system in Delhi: HC

New Delhi, Feb 01: The Delhi High Court on Thursday suggested wide-ranging reforms, including deployment of traffic police in every bus stand, in transport management system to prevent road accidents and better accessibility to disabled people in the national capital.

A Bench comprising of Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice H R Malhotra suggested that the government take all buses of old model off the road and bring new model buses which is disabled-friendly.

The court gave its suggestion while taking suo motu action on a news report published in a daily on the rising number of deaths in road accidents.

The Bench also suggested there should be a traffic constable at every bus stand to regulate timely arrival and departure of the buses.

Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, who has been appointment amicus curie in this matter, also submitted a list of suggestions before the court after consultations with senior officials on the issue.

Patients evacuated at Newcastle hospital

Fifty patients in wheelchairs and beds have been evacuated after a fire broke out at a hospital in Newcastle, north of Sydney.

The fire started in a recreational room, not directly attached to the main section of the Lingard Private Hospital on Merewether Street, Merewether, at about 6.20pm (AEDT) Monday.

NSW Fire Brigades Superintendent Tom Cooper said the hospital activated its emergency evacuation plan because of heavy smoke in the wards.

"It was as a precaution and activated 50 people from the private hospital, it was patients in wheelchairs, some on portable beds," he said.

"These hospitals have special features to stop any smoke penetrating too far into the ward, so a lot of these people weren't taken form the building, they were just taken from one part of the building to the next.

Addai hasn't forgetten high school teammate

MIAMI — LaJuan Moore was smiling Wednesday, and it wasn't just because he was going to the Super Bowl.

"He's always like this," his mother said. "Been that way since he was a little baby."

The smile wasn't what Colts running back Joseph Addai noticed when the two first met in the ninth grade at their Houston high school.

It was the sight of Moore with his hand out.

"He said we met because I borrowed 50 cents from him and never paid him back," Moore said, laughing at the recollection. "I admit I borrowed the 50 cents, but I did pay him back."

Out of that, a friendship was born.

In a way, it was just natural. Both were football players, one on defense and the other on offense at Sharpstown High.

Addai was the quarterback, and Moore was the safety stopper.

SAN DIEGO -- Amador Ramirez was just trying to park his van in a handicapped spot when it kept going, straight into an Albertsons market.
