The Transportation Security Administration continues to shake down little old ladies in wheelchairs, lest able-bodied Arab men be offended at being subjected to added scrutiny.
And in Boston last week, police hyper-reacted to a bomb actually a flashing circuit board that only a deluded Lost in Space junkie would believe to be a bomb. Now two young advertising staffers for Turner Broadcasting face felony charges. Welcome to the age of thoughtless bureaucratic over-reaction, in which earnest people insist upon following Draconian procedure when common sense shouts otherwise.
The Turner stunt, in this post-9/11 era, certainly was tasteless and maybe a little stupid. But to stir a major emergency in a major city over a blinking circuit board a high-tech version of a Lite Bright design requires a special kind of unthinking, bureaucratic stupidity.
THEREFORE I AM: Some idiots vote and make mistakes
The good stuff is always buried deep in the newspaper. Oh, sure, the big-time stories make the front page with the giant headlines that scream out for your attention, but I like to take special notice of the itty bitty headlines on page 16. If this doesn't pique your interest, just resign yourself to perusing the mind-numbing Britney/K-Fed stories. The Reuters news service reported that officials in the Garden State are considering removing the word "idiot" from its state constitution so as not to bar people with mental disabilities from voting. I hazard too guess that New Jersey may very well be the only state in the union with the word "idiot" in its constitution."Idiot" is one of those odd words that meant something years and years ago but now means something quite different, kind of like "gay." Today, we wouldn't use "gay" to describe a child on Christmas morning anymore than we'd use the word "idiot" to describe someone with a mental disability.

For years, retired English teacher Merle Kimmel has been in the back of my mind as I put pen to paper. She called the first time to inform me gently that I had used a non-word, "heighth." I never made that mistake again. "The correct word is 'height,'" she explained, "and I'm not surprised you used the wrong one. So many people do."
Fortunately, Kimmel, who was chafed by chalk dust in Louisville, Ohio, schools for 30 years, does not suffer fools gladly. Especially those who write for a living.
There were two other calls to correct my English and grammar. And she remembers sending a basic grammar book to someone else in the newsroom. Don't get me wrong, hers is not a mean-spirited upbraiding. Kimmel just loves the language as do her fellow English teachers still in the trenches.
