`Dreams' fulfilled for residents

That's what's being opened to fixed-income residents at the eight-story Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority's Keys Senior Towers in Stow by their more affluent friends at the 150-acre Laurel Lake retirement community in Hudson.

Keys residents vote with ever-present smiles and unbridled laughter that this unique arrangement is better than a massage.

I motored over to the Keys earlier this week to see for myself.

And what a joyous event to behold!

Members of Laurel Lake's staff -- clad in long-sleeved, chambray shirts -- were on hand to weave a few dreams for Keys residents as part of what's called the Second Wind Dreams program.

Keys residents months earlier had been given questionnaires to complete, asking about their dreams -- what they would most like to do or to have.

Fire forces hospital evacuation

FIFTY patients in wheelchairs and beds have been evacuated after a fire broke out at a hospital in Newcastle, north of Sydney.

The fire started in a recreational room, not directly attached to the main section of the Lingard Private Hospital on Merewether Street, Merewether, at about 6.20pm (AEDT) today.

NSW Fire Brigades Superintendent Tom Cooper said the hospital activated its emergency evacuation plan because of heavy smoke in the wards.

"It was as a precaution and activated 50 people from the private hospital, it was patients in wheelchairs, some on portable beds," he said.

"These hospitals have special features to stop any smoke penetrating too far into the ward, so a lot of these people weren't taken form the building, they were just taken from one part of the building to the next.

Judges deem Constitution 'fluid'

Every year since 1973, millions of Americans have paused to remember the day when new words entered the American vocabulary. Words fraught with ambiguity, like "the right of personal privacy." Euphemisms, like "terminate one's pregnancy." Obscure phrases, like "the penumbras of the Bill of Rights." January after January we take time to remember these words and the carnage they have caused.

In an act of breathtaking judicial arrogance, the Supreme Court of the United States on Jan. 22, 1973, "discovered" a right to abortion in the Constitution which had, theretofore, been overlooked by lawyers, judges and scholars for almost 200 years. As a consequence of the court's ruling, more than 47 million unborn children have perished at the hands of abortionists in this country. Thousands of women have suffered physical and emotional injury.

On Faith: Avoid Satan's crafty, deadly trap of taking offense

"Woe unto the world because of its offenses for it must needs be that offenses come; but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh." Matthew 18:7

Anyone who has ever trapped animals knows that a trap needs one of two things to be successful. It must be hidden so that the potential prey will inadvertently stumble upon it, and a trap must be baited to lure an animal into the trap's deadly jaws.

No stopping now

After years of declining a friend's offer of nomination to the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame, Ventura College women's basketball coach Ned Mircetic finally relented this year.

For the first time, he is eligible to be inducted. The inductees will be announced later this month.
